| Tarboro is the county seat of Edgecombe County, North Carolina. It is part of the Rocky Mount, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 11,138. Tarboro is located in North Carolina's Inner Banks region, between the Piedmont and the Outer Banks. Historic Tarboro, North Carolina, was chartered in 1760 on the banks of the Tar River. Tarboro is one of North Carolina's oldest towns, and has one of the largest historic districts in the state with 45 blocks of beautiful old homes, parks, and churches. Tarboro's downtown is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, as is the town commons, and many other houses and churches in Tarboro. Tarboro's Town Commons is one of the only two original town commons left in the United States (the other is in Boston). The 15-acre town commons is used for local concerts and events. Tarboro in conveniently located just 72 miles east of the capital city of Raleigh, 20 miles from Rocky Mount, and 25 miles from Greenville, home of East Carolina University. Tarboro is easily accessible by Interstate 95 and US Highway 64. Tarboro's residents have access to award winning medical care at Heritage Hospital, a full-service, 117-bed acute care facility which partners with University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. |
